Extension build, kitchen fit and more in an 1860 period miners cottage
The brief
Our customers wanted to transform a cold, damp and impractical extension into a modern, spacious and useful family living space. Alongside this, we needed to bring the rest of the cottage up to a modern standard, and add an additional bathroom on the rear of the house to make sure this growing family could stay in this characterful cottage.
The process
We worked to understand the budget for the project and designed a scheme of work that would fit the budget and deliver the clients main priorities. We planned the timings to minimise disruption and work in the most efficient way possible. We began with removing internal walls and a door in the extension, then added extra insulation to the walls to help bring up the EPC rating. We worked closely with Howden’s Kitchens and the customer to design a bespoke kitchen perfectly suited to this new space.
Then we installed the kitchen, along with extra bespoke cupboards under the stairs to maximise storage, and a new staircase rail. Jamie, acting as the project manager, also managed all the subcontractors to install a new upstairs bathroom, modern bolier and new electrics for the whole house.
Next, we moved outside and dug the foundations for the new bathroom. This ended up being a lot of digging by hand to find the sewer pipe and correctly install the build over in line with building regulations requirements. We then created the structure and finally knocked through a door into the main house. To finish the job, we got the best tiler around to come and tile and a great plumber to install the bathroom.
The results
The customers now have a great family home they can stay in long term, that’s warm and with space to grow. For us, that is why we do what we do - we want to make sure people have the right spaces to suit their lives and homes they can be happy in.
